Grant Davey
I live and work by the sea, somewhere in Hampshire, UK.

This site is predominantly about graphic design and typography as these are my main areas of interest. It will also cover other creative pursuits such as photography, art and music, which I also enjoy. Furthermore I'll also record and comment on architecture, industrial design and and the cultural world at large.
This site contains some, all or none of the following: graphic design, typography, music, poetry, photography, sounds, visual experiment, ephemera, humour, art and more...
Land of lost content. Northern Soul. Playing the piano/guitar. Tea. Homebrew beer. No-Limit Texas Hold-Em. Stax Records. The King - Elvis Presley. Robert Rauschenberg. Giant African Land Snails. Making things. The Tricorn. Rice pudding. Ray Charles. Graphic Design books. Keeping a sketchbook. Being creative.

15/06/2008 Back again!
I think it's fair to say that I haven't given my site the love that it needs in the past few months. I'm back again, but for how long, I'm not sure. Regardless of this though I think it's important to not look back and keep on keeping on. I'm going to try to do a bit more to the site in the coming months, despite planning a wedding and add some new stuff to it. In the meantime, I noticed the other day that my Wobbly Frame beer label design has made the front page of the Hampshire Brewery website. Check it out at http://www.hampshirebrewery.com
07/11/2007 The view from the Spinnaker Tower
Ever wondered what the view from the top of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth is like? Well wonder no more.

15/08/2007 Casino Royale poster
My brother is lucky enough to own this original movie poster for the 1967 version of "Casino Royale", and he's looking to sell it to a James Bond poster collector, or fan. It's a US 6-sheet poster, 81" x 81" has been recently restored and linen-backed by a top london restorer. If you're a James Bond fan and want a unique slice of Bond history, contact me, and I'll put you in touch with him. Oh and by the way, this is a seriously impressive poster, so only get in contact if you're looking to buy!
15/08/2007 I'm still alive
After some time away to investgate a cure for the common cold, and the existence of big cats on Dartmoor, I'm disappointed to report that two months later, my results are inconclusive! Whilst away my site has continued to see no real search engine activity, other than my snail page, or indeed, any type of mass appeal within the global cyberspace community. Undeterred by this though, I have returned boomerang like, to show the world what's in my brain. I've tweaked the homepage a bit, had a reshuffle and will be adding more in the coming weeks. Look out for a music page!
10/06/2007 Spinnaker Tower photos
I've uploaded some new photo's that I took last week. They were taken early evening and show the lesser seen, back of the tower, which is just as impressive as the front. The Spinnaker Tower
04/06/2007 Bring back Emigre magazine
As a source of graphic design inspiration Emigre magazine was second to none. Throughout my college and University years, a trip to London was not complete without a stroll down Charing Cross Road, and a browse in Shipleys and Zwemmer. Without fail I would always leave with a fresh copy of either Emigre or Eye magazine, and all the copies I have bought over the years remain core to my graphic design/typography magazine collection. Eye, is of course still going strong and I frequently visit the website, but Emigre magazine ended in 2005. They still sell excellent fonts and the site is great, but I miss the magazine and would love to see new ones on my shelf again. Bring back Emigre! – http://www.emigre.com.
29/05/2007 Designers responsibilities to the environment
A very good friend of mine Rick Blackburn, has a letter published in the latest copy of Creative Review magazine. He's the Creative Director at Flo Creative, and is a strong advocate of using recycled paper stock and environmentally friendly inks. He makes some great points about designers taking responsibility for the environment, and I support his stand. Find out more about Rick and Flo Creative – http://www.flocreative.co.uk.
25/05/2007 Inspired exhibition artists reception
Last night was the artists reception at the Aspex gallery in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth for Inspired! Close friends and family also attended with me, and a good night was had by all. My artwork Spinnaker is on display with 40 other artists work till the 24th June. A photo of me with my work, is on my Flickr page.
24/05/2007 Chelsea, chelsea...
Yesterday I enjoyed a day at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. When I'm not designing or making stuff I enjoy the outdoor life, and went to gather inspiration for my own garden. While I was there I also got to see some of the BBC's Gardening stars. Have a look at who was there on the photography page.
19/05/2007 Up for the cup!
It's FA Cup Final day and I have to say that the new Wembley Stadium looks awesome. A building that is both beautiful, functional and has exquisite attention to detail. Shame that the first half of the cup final hasn't lived up to the stage upon which it's being played!
14/05/2007 The New Typography
I have finally got round to buying myself a copy of Jan Tschicholds 1928 seminal text The New Typography. Since its translation in 1995 it's been on my "books to get" list but somehow I've always bought something else. Thankfully this is no longer the case and I shall be sitting down soon to read it. A list of my other design books can be found in the library.
13/05/2007 Brassed off!
Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the Grimethorpe Colliery band. A change from the music I usually see performed live, but none the less, a good evening.
10/05/2007 Maneki Neko
Whist in Hamburg, my mates and I stayed in an area with many asian specialist shops. One particular shop which was opposite the hotel sold Maneki Neko beckoning cats, a symbol of good luck and good fortune in China and Japan. It's a curious item, but has a charm which I like very much.
09/05/2007 Inspired! Exhibition
I received a call today form the Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth, to say that a piece of work I had submitted for consideration had been accepted. The exhibition begins on the 23rd May and features creative work from local people about Portsmouths Spinnaker Tower. They'll be more about this in the coming weeks.
08/05/2007 Hamburg
I returned today from a weekend away in Hamburg. While I was there, I got some fantastic photos in the Landungsbrücken area of the city, which are on the photography page. These will no doubt be the inspiration for a piece of work in the coming months. One of my fellow travellers Stu has also put up some great pictures on his Flickr account. Group member photo's on Flickr.
