The Spinnaker Tower
The nice thing about the tower is that there are so many different views around Portsmouth that include it. The view as you drive down the A27 by Farlington, with the tower dead ahead of you is nice, and the view from the common by the Hovercraft Terminal is also quite striking. When I'm next in town, I'll take some alternative views and upload them.
The pictures below were taken early evening with the sun low in the sky.
The view from the top
The thing everyone wants to know is, what's the view like from the top? Well the day I went up, it was fantastic.
The tower is a fantastic structure and something to be proud of for the local area. It dominates the skyline and draws visitors to Portsmouth from far and wide. There are lots of great views of the tower around Southsea. The view from Portsdown hill is great, equally the view as you arrive into Portsmouth harbour on the Isle of Wight cat or car ferry, shows the front of the tower beautifully. At night time on a clear night, the view from Ryde pier across the solent is good, and if it's an occasion like Christmas or Halloween, you can guarantee the lights will reflect the occasion perfectly.
The tower also inspired me to create my art work Spinnaker, which was included in an exhibition at the Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays called 'Inspired'. Local artists were invited to create works themed or inspired by the tower. It hung in the coffee shop gallery between the 23 May - 24 June 2007.
Pinhole camera photographs
As well as taking conventional digital photographs of the tower, I've also taken a series of photo's with my pinhole camera. As ever they have a very different visual quality and you have to allow for a certain amount of randomness in the final pictures.
